Numerical Airfoil Design

General Approach

The base airfoil used within DISPROP is a NACA 65(3)-218. The main focus of the project is the influence of the propeller slipstream onto the highlift system. Therefor the Droop Nose and the Flap are designed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

ISM institute (TU Braunschweig) generated a droop nose using an inhouse Python design script. This script ensures that a droop nose is generated from a clean configuration with the same skin length as the clean configuration.
The aerodynamic flow computations were performed with the DLR-TAU Code, and the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was employed for most of the computations. The coordinate meshes used for aerodynamic simulations were generated with the Centaur mesh generator. Preliminary grid studies revealed that the results were grid converged to plotting accuracy of the flow quantities.
